There are times, few and far between, that I lose my motivation for writing. When that happens, one thing that really motivates me to get back on the horse is communication from my readers. I get many emails stating that my stories have helped them to make a decision about adding to their family, or caused them to step out of their comfort zone in some way to make a difference. It is then that I realize it is not about sales and rankings. While numbers can be exhilarating or even an obstacle to an author, the motivation for me continues to be to leave a mark on this world in some way before I leave it.
On inspiration:
I draw inspiration from many things, but for Chasing China, my inspiration was a news article I read about children in China being taken from their families by corrupt government officials. The wheels started to turn and I wondered what happens to a child who grows up with questions about her birth family lingering in her mind? What if she came back to China? And what happens on the China side to a family who has had their child snatched from their arms?
Words of encouragement for other authors:If you are a new or aspiring author and find yourself dragging your heels through the writing process, you need to know there are success stories out there! Just google Kathryn Stocket, author of The Help. Or Amanda Hocking. JA Konrath. All were writers who struggled for years to get their writing published and even collected hundreds of rejection letters. Eventually their tenacity paid off — and so can yours. Get to writing!
